ILLUMINATE

I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Diocesan celebration of the creative arts in the form of the ‘Illuminate’ event on Tuesday at the University of Wollongong. WOW. We have so many talented students and St John’s was prominent in the performances. Our music, drama and dance students shone on the bigger stage and I could not have been prouder of their performances. But like all high-end items the work and dedication of these students needs to be recognised. It takes effort to excel.

A massive thank you to the teaching staff in this area. For their commitment to the students, dedication to improving skills and engaging the students so well in their chosen field.

ADVENT SEASON

This Sunday 24 November we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. This also signifies the end of the Liturgical year and the commencement of the next liturgical year. This also commences the Holy Season of Advent the following Sunday, 1 December. This is a time of waiting and hope in preparation for the coming of the saviour, the birth of Jesus. To mark this occasion many Parishes and schools will prepare an Advent wreath.

This is made up of a circle of evergreen leaves and branches with four candles. The candles are white or purple and some customs have a pink candle for the third Sunday. A fifth candle, the Christ candle is placed in the centre.

On the first Sunday of Advent one candle is lit, on the second two and so on. The Christ candle is lit on Christmas Eve. The circle symbolises God’s everlasting love for us. Evergreen plants are also a symbol of endless life. Lighting an increasing number of candles represent the ever-increasing light of Christ as we move towards Christmas, where Jesus comes into the world for us.

I would ask all families to engage in the Advent activities in your local Church and

YEAR 7 2025 - ORIENTATION DAY

The Orientation Day for this group of students was held on Tuesday 12 November and was a great day. So many new students to the St John’s family arrived and took part in information sessions conducted by several staff to make them feel at home (including myself, Mr Eirth, Mr Comensoli and their year coordinator, Ms Daley) which was followed by guided tours of the school site and peer support lessons conducted by Year 9 Peer Support Leaders.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE

Over the recent school holiday period I attended a conference and one of the topical
speakers addressed the issue of ‘digital dementia’. I urge parents to google and
have a look at this issue online. I am sure it will help to inform you and your
understanding of the government’s move to ban social media for children. This is
also in line with the government’s recent statements about dealing with online
bullying and the terrible consequences of such bullying.
The effects of this bullying have the potential to be catastrophic and, rightly so, there
are moves to manage the technology that allows it to happen remotely and at times
anonymously. Why do people do this? I am baffled. It is so divergent to our Catholic
beliefs of being tolerant and welcoming.
I have said in several forums that I am often asked if bulling exists in St John’s, and
sadly it does. We deal with it and resolve matters as quickly as it is reported. The
main issue is to realise that the bully has the issue. To make someone else feel small
because they need to fell bigger. It is unacceptable.
Below is an article I read about ‘technoference’. Along the same lines as digital
dementia it is an emerging concern for our young ones.

TECHNOFERENCE

I came across this term while reading an online article. It basically talked about the interference that technology is causing in people’s lives and how we are dealing with our addictions to the technology we have. One of the major effects is that family connections are being damaged. So how do improve your family time and interactions and still use technology effectively?

I often take my eight-year-old grandson to the local park to play. I constantly see other parents with their children and Mum or Dad on their phones while the kids are ‘playing’ or trying to get their parents involved in their play. ‘In a minute’ is often used as they check their messages. Does this sound familiar? Is it something that you have seen?

Ninety-eight percent of families have at least one internet connected device in the home. Parents use their device for an average 3.5 hours per day and children for 3.0. But this varies widely depending on the situation. Research says that 47% of families use devices while eating the evening meal.

Research also tells us that parents consumed by their devices have an effect on their own children. The children can become sad or withdrawn or can act out to get their parents attention. Haven’t we all been having a wonderful conversation with others when suddenly a phone rings or beeps. In a millisecond it is instantly checked, indicating it as a bigger priority than the conversation.

When I read this article I immediately took stock of the technoference in my own life. And I was a little disappointed. Although I am old enough to have spent my early life without the internet, I haven’t ‘grown up’ with a mobile phone. I do have a heavy reliance on it though. Most of my use is as a work tool, but I also use it for many other purposes that sometimes interfere with my family relationships. The versatility and range of needs it meets, makes the phone a very attractive item to have. Not only does it meet our needs for communication and entertainment it also occupies us.

To understand the importance of mobile technology and its good uses is important. Don’t get me wrong, it is such a necessary tool for so many people over a range of purposes. But to also understand the negative side of excessive use is equally important.

We use technology extensively at the school if it supports the students learning. Our teachers constantly use technology to develop resources for the classroom and assist their teaching.

Why don’t you do an audit of your technoference? Why not google the term and have a read? (Statistics taken from 'The Conversation').

MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
SDIA54.jpg

On Tuesday 19th November the school community paid tribute to the young men in our community as we recognised International Men’s Day. The recognition of this day was led by a motivated group of year 9 students who wanted to bring awareness to an often-overlooked issue: the mental health of our teenage males. St John's students and staff were able to show their support by wearing blue hair ribbons and blue socks. Through a sausage sizzle and donations over $250 was raised for 'Beyond Blue'.

Adolescence is a time of significant change, and for many young males, it can come with unique challenges. Research shows that teenage boys may be less likely to seek help for mental health concerns, often due to societal pressures to "tough it out." However, understanding and addressing their mental health needs is vital for their long-term well-being.

Recognising the Signs

Parents play a crucial role in noticing when their adolescent son may be struggling. Here are some common signs that might indicate your son needs support:

  • Withdrawal: Avoiding friends, family, or previously enjoyed activities.
  • Mood changes: Persistent sadness, irritability, or anger.
  • Academic struggles: A noticeable drop in school performance or motivation.
  • Physical symptoms: Complaints of headaches, stomachaches, or other unexplained physical issues.
  • Risk-taking behaviour: Experimentation with substances or engaging in unsafe activities.

If you notice these signs, it’s important to approach the situation with care and open communication. Let your son know that it’s okay to talk about his feelings and that seeking help is a sign of strength.

Taking Action

Here are some steps you can take to support your son’s mental health:

  1. Start a conversation: Create a safe space for your son to share his thoughts without fear of judgment.
  2. Encourage professional support: Help him access a counsellor, psychologist, or GP experienced in adolescent mental health.
  3. Promote healthy habits: Encourage physical activity, balanced nutrition, and regular sleep to support emotional well-being.
  4. Stay informed: Learn about mental health to better understand and support your child.

Helpful Resources for Parents in Australia

Beyond_Blue.png

The following websites offer excellent resources and support for parents navigating adolescent mental health:

  • Kids Helpline: Provides 24/7 free counselling for young people aged 5-25. They also offer advice for parents.
  • Headspace: A national youth mental health foundation providing early intervention services for 12-25-year-olds.
  • Beyond Blue: Offers resources and a 24/7 support line to help people understand and manage mental health challenges.
  • ReachOut Parents: Tailored advice and resources to support parents of teenagers.
  • Black Dog Institute: Evidence-based tools and programs to support mental health and well-being.
  • MensLine Australia: A 24/7 support service for men, with resources specific to parenting and mental health.

As we celebrate the positive role men and boys play in our lives, let’s also commit to nurturing their mental health. By creating supportive environments and promoting open conversations, we can help our teenage sons thrive now and in the future.

For urgent support: If you or someone you know needs immediate help, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800.

NETBALL SCHOOL STATE CUP

What an incredible experience we had at the Netball State Cup at Netball Central in Olympic Park, Sydney! Our day began bright and early with a 5:30 am start, but the excitement and determination of our Year 7/8 boys’ and girls’ teams were evident from the outset.

YEAR 7/8 GIRLS TEAM

The girls’ team faced a challenging pool with some extremely talented opponents. Our opening game was a nail-biter but unfortunately ended in a narrow loss. This would be the only game we lost all day, as the team bounced back with a strong win in their second match and an intense 17-17 draw in their final game. Despite these efforts, we narrowly missed the semi-finals. However, the girls displayed impressive patches of play, showing outstanding teamwork and unwavering commitment to each other and will definitely be a team to watch in the future

Netball_State_Cup_Final_2024_2_.jpg

YEAR 7/8 BOYS TEAM - STATE RUNNERS UP

The boys’ team had a rocky start in their first match, trailing at half-time. With a few tactical tweaks from Mr. Gray, the boys turned the game around to secure a win. They carried this momentum into their next two games, both of which they won, earning a spot in the semi-finals. The semi-final was an absolute thriller, going into two periods of extra time. In a nail-biting finish, “Johnnies” came out victorious and advanced to the grand final against the highly skilled team from Hunter Sports High School.

The grand final was tough, and while the boys gave it everything they had, they fell just short, finishing as runners-up in the state—a phenomenal accomplishment!

Netball_State_Cup_2024_Runners_Up.jpg

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Gray for his dedication in coaching and training the boys’ team throughout the year, and to Mrs. Jennings for her support of the girls’ team. A big thank you also goes to Sam McLaughlin from Year 11 for coaching the girls and to our umpires, Natarsha Mandavy and Ella Mansfield, for their excellent work. Special thanks to Archie, Amelia, and Cody for their photography and scoring on the day, as well as to all the parents and families who came to support and cheer for us.

Mrs Kate Jennings

Garner_Nicholas.jpgAs the year winds down for most students, it’s a different story for Year 11, who are experiencing a fast-paced start to their final year of high school. Our new Year 12 students have embraced this first term with great maturity and enthusiasm, and I commend them for their efforts. As the term draws to a close, many assessment tasks are due, so I’d like to remind students about the assessment policy and the misadventure process. If there are any issues, please encourage students to reach out to me or the curriculum office for support.

With the holidays approaching, I encourage students to use their time wisely. It’s important to strike a balance between fun and relaxation while ensuring they stay up to date with their work and study notes.

A highlight of this term and likely one of the standout experiences of their final year was the Senior Retreat held in Week 2. The students represented their families with pride, fully engaging with the activities and opportunities provided. This experience not only strengthened their bonds as a year group but also laid the foundation for their final year together. I urge students to carry forward the lessons and insights gained during the retreat and to continue embracing opportunities to foster unity and connection as a cohort.

    CULBURRA PRESCHOOL PERFORMANCE

On Friday the 8th of November, St John’s Aboriginal Dance Troupe performed at Culburra Preschool as part of our 2024 NAIDOC performances within the community. Students danced the Welcome, Heartbeat, Pipi, Taba Naba, Black cockatoo and Lyrebird. The highlight of the day was watching the dance troupe teach the younger children how to move to each of the dances. They loved the clapsticks and music!

The day ended with a sausage sizzle and morning tea. Students were commended on their kind nature and willingness to teach. Their performance offers a beautiful celebration of Aboriginal culture, while helping to educate and share this knowledge with future generations.

In April, the annual Ceremony at Anzac Memorial Hyde Park is delivered entirely by school students. It includes the Master of Ceremonies, keynote addresses, readings, and musical accompaniment. The Service also consists of an Inspection of the Guard by the official party, The Ode, The Last Post, and Rouse.

The service aims to educate primary and secondary school students about Australia’s military history whilst paying respect to the service and sacrifice of servicemen and women of the Australian Defence Force.

To mark the 70th Anniversary of this service in 2023, RSL NSW, the Department of Education, Catholic Schools NSW and the Association of Independent Schools NSW launched an art competition for NSW school students. Following its success, the art competition and exhibition will return in 2025.

Two artworks will be selected for the cover of the 2025 service program.

    LUCY BACALES - YEAR 8

    'THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD'

My artwork is called ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ and shows an ANZAC soldier with poppies seemingly growing off of his face and petals blowing into the wind. This painting symbolises that as we grow older and we reach the 110th year since Gallipoli, the faces of our nation’s heroes have faded. But their sacrifice and courage will never be forgotten, and the poppies that tribute their memory will bloom eternally. I tried to encompass both fear and determination in the eyes of my soldier, and I reflected on how the ominous future would frighten them, and yet they fought for our country with such bravery and courage. I also tried to personally connect my father and grandfather, who are/were in the Australian Defence Force, and my experience with having to say goodbye to my Dad when he was deployed for a couple of years. I included the Ode in my painting because I love the lines ‘They shall not grow old’ because it encompasses the peace that they are at now after fighting for us.

    They_Shall_not_Grow_Old_1_.jpg

    JAZMINE TOLHURST-MOON

    'SAYING GOODBYE'

The title of my artwork is Saying Goodbye; it symbolises courage through the depiction of a father saying goodbye to his child as he departs for war. The artwork also shows sacrifice, as the father has to leave his family and misses watching his daughter grow up. This painting holds a deep personal connection to my family’s Navy background, as my father serves in the Navy. I represented this connection by portraying the main subject in a Navy uniform. To further personalise the piece, I included a young girl hugging her father in goodbye, a moment that connects strongly with me, as I’ve had to say goodbye to my dad before his deployments many times. This painting highlights a sunrise and poppies. The sunrise in my painting signifies a new day starting, along with new beginnings. The poppies signify remembrance and hope for a pleasant future.

    REMEMBRANCE DAY

Chloe Daniel and Daniel Rajeev represented St John's at the Sussex Inlet RSL sub-branch's Remembrance Day Service, honouring Australian men and women who have served and died so that we may live in freedom and peace. This significant day commemorates the Armistice of World War 1, which saw the unconditional surrender of the German forces to the Allies at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 after four years of bloody conflict.

      The Changing Nature Of Careers

Careers look different to how they used to – once upon a time you picked uni, a trade, or a job, and that was pretty much it for the rest of your working life. Now, tradies get degrees in management, professionals take short courses to round out their qualifications, and around 39% of students work and study at the same time.

Apprenticeships and traineeships are great because you generally don’t need a lot of skills or knowledge when you start, and you’ll get quality on-the-job training as well as classroom based training. Plus, you’ll be earning an income all along the way.

Skilling Australia Foundation found in 2019 that VET graduates had:

      • Higher starting salaries – $56k vs $54k for uni grads
      • A higher rate of employment – 78% vs 68% for uni grads
      • Apprentices had a graduate employment rate of 92%

What’s the difference between an apprenticeship and traineeship?

The main difference is usually the industry – apprenticeships tend to be for more technical trades, while trainees might learn business skills or job-specific skills they need before they can be fully employed. Traineeships are also generally shorter than apprenticeships.

Finding a traineeship or apprenticeship can be a great choice – here’s why:

      • You’ll enjoy satisfying and practical work, and in many trades you’ll avoid being stuck behind a desk.
      • Get paid while you learn, and start living in the ‘real world’ sooner.
      • You’ll probably have a job before you finish, and if you do move employers, you’ll have recognisable skills that make you more employable.
      • You generally don’t need great marks to get started.

There are also usually a range of incentives for businesses to take on trainees and apprentices, which means more are available and there will be lots of support to make sure you finish your training.

      How do I get started?

First, put together a resume (also known as a list of good stuff you’ve done). Include everything, and get it checked by someone who loves you (they’ll point out the good things you’ve missed) and someone who’s good with writing, like a teacher or family member

Finally, start job searching. You need to go and find them. But it doesn’t have to be difficult – there are heaps of apprenticeships and traineeships in just about every area, including regional and remote places.

Here’s how to search for an apprenticeship or traineeship

Let people know you’re looking. Tell your teachers, friends, or parents (and their friends). Word of mouth is still a great way to get a job.

Search job sites. Simply googling apprenticeships or traineeships in your area will give you a good start. You might also like to try searching popular job sites like SEEK or Indeed.

Look at government websites. Most countries usually have a government website built especially for apprentices and trainees to look for opportunities, including support options and other handy info. Here are some government sites you might like to browse:

      Find out more

So, if you’d like to earn a good wage, enjoy a secure and rewarding job, and earn while you learn, getting an apprenticeship or traineeship could be the right option for you. And we can guarantee it’ll be a whole lot more fun than spending your life on the couch.

If you’d like more help, or any advice on finding an apprenticeship talk to Ms Arenas. Or you might like to read more resources on the website here.

Open Universities Australia can help you get into many university degrees without an ATAR.

      Here's how it works:

      1. You find your chosen degree on their website
      2. Instead of applying directly for the degree, you enrol in the first few subjects as an online student. There won't be any entry requirements.
      3. Once you successfully pass those subjects, you'll be able to transfer into the full degree. You can keep studying online, or ask for an on-campus place.

You'll earn credit for your subjects, which means you won't fall behind everyone who enrolled the traditional way. You'll be studying towards your degree from day one.

For example, you could include a diploma course in a similar area of study as your preferred degree course.
